Sutherland chairman and chief executive Dilip Vellodi told reporters the company would put up a three-hectare BPO campus in Carmona, Cavite as part of its expansion. The campus, which is expected to be finished in 18 months, will have a capacity of 8,000 people.

“A favorable economic environment, availability of high-quality talents, a robust infrastructure and business-friendly government policies have been prime drivers for our rapid expansion in the country. The Carmona campus will be an integrated delivery center for our global clients,” Vellodi said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the campus.

Sutherland already employs about 13,000 people in the Philippines, and this is expected to reach 15,000 when the current expansion is completed and once the campus becomes fully operational.

“Sutherland would have had a significant expansion to its headcount in the Philippines,” Vellodi added. (more…)

It has joined ranks with BPO (business process outsourcing) and KPO (knowledge process outsourcing). But, unlike BPO and KPO that rely largely on foreign multinationals for their business, the MPOs count desi firms as their clients.

An MPO firm undertakes the entire array of marketing, sales and advertising operations for its clients that often are small and medium business enterprises lacking marketing muscle but keen to expand their product reach.

“Many small enterprises find it difficult to expand their businesses despite having a good product as they lack marketing and sales depth. This is where we pitch in,” said Vinod Harith, founder and director of CMO Axis, an MPO.

An ex-marketing head at software firm Wipro, Harith, 40, started his firm four years back and closed the last fiscal with revenues of around $1 million (R5 crore). (more…)

It sure seems to be trying. In fact, last quarter, most BPO subsidiaries and firms grew at a faster clip than their IT counterparts.

Tien-tsin Huang and Puneet Jain, analysts with JP Morgan, said BPO major WNS’ robust revenue growth of 2% sequentially and 7% year-on-year last quarter underlines buoyancy for this year.

“WNS is seeing benefits from restructuring… and healthy demand environment for BPO services. The company is also seeing a nice build-up of large contracts in its pipeline. WNS needs to win a couple each year to drive next year’s revenue growth,” they said in a note last week.

Back home, even HCL saw its margins salvaged by a turnaround in the BPO numbers.

“While… results (of HCL) are ahead of expectations with positive surprise on margins, a large part of the beat was driven by turnaround in the BPO segment,” Religare analysts Manoj Singla, Rumit Dugar and Udit Garg said in a note on Wednesday. (more…)

When information technology company Infosys upset the market on Friday with its annual numbers and expectation for the months ahead, its poor cousin, Infosys BPO, sprung a pleasant surprise.

The largest subsidiary of India’s second largest IT services company reported a 400-basis points improvement in operating margins, to 22 per cent in 2011-12. Net profit jumped 44 per cent to $61.9 million. The margins, unprecedented in the BPO sector, are even better than some IT services companies and takes it closer to Infosys’ operating margin of 29.8 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011-12.

Infosys BPO has completed 10 years of operations. It reported 17 per cent growth in revenue productivity per employee. During the year, headcount growth at 10 per cent was less than revenue growth, indicating focus on offering high-value services with products and platforms. In the fourth quarter, it added 22 clients.

“All the three acquisitions we have done in the past have enabled us to offer more high-end services, which have improved our profit margins to a great extent. While the acquisitions are contributing about 20 per cent to our overall BPO revenues, they have added substantially to our capabilities to become a transformational BPO,” said Swaminathan D, managing director. (more…)

BPAP executives said the latest campaign aims to raise awareness of global IT-BPO career opportunities for Filipino job seekers and also among graduates including their parents.

According to BPAP president and chief-executive-officer Benedict Hernandez, the portal (http://www.workabroadlivehere.com) is one piece of a larger campaign to acquaint graduates and professionals considering a career shift with the Philippines’ vibrant IT-BPO industry, which spans more than 20 different functional and vertical segments.

“We have jobs for animators, game developers, IT professionals, software developers, financial analysts, accountants, doctors and nurses, and many other professionals” Hernandez said. (more…)

“While the decision to move from Firstsource was a difficult one, I feel the timing is right to hand over the reins to Rajesh,” he said, adding, “I am confident that under the new leadership the company is well-equipped to progress in its next phase of growth.”
